MUSD board member not sold on employee raises

Maricopa Unified School District board member Patti Coutre was the lone voice at a meeting Wednesday to discuss the 2018-19 fiscal year budget.
At the regular meeting, board members got a first look at the proposed budget for the upcoming school year. One of the most notable differences to expenditures are the district-wide raises that were approved after the Arizona #RedForEd movement.
Districts across the state were allocated the money and it was up to each board to decide how to distribute those monies. At a previous meeting, the MUSD board decided to give a 10 percent base salary increase to all certified staff (mainly teachers), a 5 percent base salary increase to all classified and administrative staff, and a 5 percent base salary increase for 37 bus drivers and three mechanics. In total, this would cost the district more than $2.5 million.
