Pinal farmers’ rep seeks solutions in face of water cuts

The difficult work to find a way to mitigate the pain of implementing big cuts to Arizona’s water supply from the Colorado River is underway.
The steering committee on the Arizona Drought Contingency Plan met for the first time Thursday and made it clear that one of its principal goals is to mitigate the effect of the plan on agriculture. Cuts to agriculture’s share of Central Arizona Project water will primarily affect Pinal County farmers and likely will take away half of their total water supply.
“We do have a limited amount of time before the 2019 Arizona legislative session. We have a lot of work and a short amount of time to get there,” said Tom Buschatzke, director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources. “We are seeking full commitment and support for the Drought Contingency Plan.”
