CAC board hears 1,200-graduates goal is realistic

College board members heard an update on student progress and benchmarks Tuesday as the college continues to work through its strategic plan.

Members of the Central Arizona College Governing Board learned that the college is on target with the strategic plan’s goal of awarding 1,200 certificates or degrees per year, which is slightly above the average number awarded at similarly sized, rural colleges, said Jenni Cardenas, vice president of student services.

The strategic plan committee also set a benchmark of transferring 50 percent of its students to a four-year college or university. Cardenas said the college currently has about a 30 percent transfer rate, which is higher than state and national trends. However, board member Debra Banks questioned why the number was set at 50 percent, which she said was too high and requested staff re-evaluate whether that transfer rate was feasible.
