Volkmer says state prison population has peaked after critical report

A new report condemns Arizona for its rising prison population, but Pinal County’s top prosecutor says he’s trying to only incarcerate the people who should be behind bars.

FWD.us, a bipartisan political group founded by various Silicon Valley business leaders, released a study last week that found Arizona’s prison population has grown 12 times larger over the last 40 years. Yet the state’s crime rates have declined, both in numbers and per capita rates.

“There are almost as many people in prison as there are students at the University of Arizona,” the report states.
