City Council Update: Oct. 16 Meeting

At the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 16, Mayor Jeff Serdy read two proclamations. The first, designating the week of October 23 through October 31 as “Red Ribbon Week,” remembers the passing of DEA agent Enrique (Kiki) Camarena and encourages citizens to show intolerance for drugs in our schools, work places, and communities. The document was accepted by AJPD Chief Thomas Kelly.

The second proclamation designates November 1, 2018 as “Extra Mile Day.” The day is set aside to applaud those individuals and organizations who are “going the extra mile” in volunteerism and service in order to make a positive difference in the world.

Assistant City Manager Matt Busby presented an update on the .2% sales tax approved in 2014. The revenue from the tax is dedicated to fund roadway maintenance and repairs in Apache Junction. Busby showed that Street Projects Sales Tax (SST) Revenues since 2015 are $2,971,561.18, while expenditures are $5,540,471.82. The difference of $2,568,910.64 has been paid through the use of HURF funds, which will be paid back to the sales tax fund as revenues increase.
