Pinal candidates agree on investigating school vouchers after audit reports misuse

Some Pinal County legislative candidates say there needs to be an investigation into how public funds given out in the form of school vouchers may have been misused for personal expenses.

The Arizona Auditor General’s Office released a report last week detailing how more than $700,000 disbursed through the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Account program was spent on unapproved purchases.

The program hands out debit cards to families seeking public assistance to send their children outside the public school system. The governor signed a bill last year to expand the program and the matter is now the subject of Proposition 305, a ballot measure in this year’s election.
