Florence’s comprehensive parks plan to begin

A consultant will work through July 2019 on a parks and recreation comprehensive plan, plus master plans of specific park sites, as part of the town’s General Plan update.
The Town Council Monday approved a contract with GreenPlay LLC for the plan at a cost of up to $241,969, which Community Services Director Bryan Hughes said was within the budgeted estimate. GreenPlay was chosen after the town issued a “request for qualifications” in August. The town interviewed all three teams that responded, and GreenPlay emerged as the most qualified, Hughes told the council. The consultant’s plans include a “Findings and Visioning Strategies Development Workshop,” according to a memo from Hughes to the council.
Sitting as the Board of Adjustment, the council members held a public hearing and approved a request from Burger King for a variance allowing an electronic message sign. Such a sign is not allowed in the town’s current fast food sign code, so it requires a variance. Burger King’s local competitors McDonald’s, Sonic and Taco Bell already have electronic message signs.
