Billingsley: Florence a good place to develop Smart Cities

Cities and towns around the world are aiming to be “Smart Cities,” ones that use technology to increase efficiency, share information and improve service.

It’s technology similar to what their citizens are already using. “If you go to Home Depot now you see that there are refrigerators that talk to your phone and send you a shopping list, washers and dryers that you can turn on and off from your phone,” Florence Town Manager Brent Billingsley said.

Florence wants to be a Smart City as well, with contracts this year with cybersecurity provider Subex, AireBeam broadband and Milandr advanced metering infrastructure. But is it all really needed in Florence?
