Casa Grande cell tower would be ‘disguised’ as 80-foot palm tree

Mobile phone customers might see an increase in coverage in Casa Grande after a city board approved two towers.

On Thursday the Planning and Zoning Commission voted to send a recommendation for an 80-foot “mono palm” wireless tower that will service AT&T customers. The tower will be in the interior of a lot on the southwest corner of Kortsen and Trekell roads, near the Tierra Palmas neighborhood.

The placement of the tower, which will be designed to look like a palm tree, wasn’t without discussion, and some consternation, by neighbors. Chuck Wright, a planner and designer in Casa Grande, read a letter from the area homeowners association decrying the tower and asking commissioners not to allow it. City staff also received several other inquiries and comments against the project.
