All it cost for Paul Shirk and the Maricopa Historical Society was a dollar to purchase the iconic Zephyr Silver Horizon railcar from Pinal County.
But it wasn’t just any dollar for Shirk, who is president of the historical society used to complete the purchase. Instead he tracked down and found a $1 bill with the series date of 1948, the same year the railcar was built.
“We all like history, but we like having fun with history,” Shirk said of the historical society, which preserves and tells the story of the history of Maricopa and the surrounding area. “We don’t do boring things. It just doesn’t happen.”
