Recycled I-10 lanes in Pinal given new life

People are used to recycling cans and bottles, but asphalt? That’s exactly what road construction crews are using to make new travel lanes on Interstate 10.

As part of the I-10 realignment at the State Route 87 interchange, the old lanes of the interstate have been removed and will be replaced with new travel lanes, said Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Herrmann. When that happens, he said, the lanes that are removed are being ground up and will become the base for the new travel lanes.

“Is it common? It’s not the first time, but we don’t usually have the opportunity to recycle the asphalt,” Herrmann said.
