Cook wants $20 million for Pinal farmers

Gov. Doug Ducey signed a deal last month promising $9 million to help Pinal County farmers pump more groundwater. But one area legislator has introduced a bill to appropriate more money into the pot.

State Rep. David Cook, R-Globe, introduced House Bill 2590 last week in an attempt to provide more funding for irrigation districts that will soon have to rely less on Colorado River water and start pumping more from the ground.

The drought-contingency plan legislators rushed to pass by Jan. 31 in order to meet a deadline imposed by the federal government included a provision to let lawmakers appropriate more money for Pinal County farmers.
