Florence opposes adjusted alignment for North-South freeway

The town is asking Pinal County and neighboring cities to join it in reaffirming their support for a future north-south freeway that passes through Florence.

About 18 months ago, the Arizona Department of Transportation surprised local communities by adding a new “west alternative” near the border of the Gila River Indian Community that bypasses Florence, Town Manager Brent Billingsley told the Florence Town Council Monday.

He said this is “a very different alignment” than the one that has been discussed for years. The more easterly corridor was part of the resolution that Pinal County voters approved when they approved the Regional Transportation Authority in 2017, Billingsley added. Although Pinal County has been allowed to collect a half-cent sales tax, the RTA is currently on hold pending litigation.
