Pinal Board of Supervisors Supports Trade Agreement

Unanimous resolution cites regional trade and cross-border investment

On June 12, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors (BOS) unanimously approved a resolution supporting the United States, Mexico, Canada Trade Agreement, which is currently before Congress. The agreement, if passed, would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which was passed in 1994.

The resolution reads: “Whereas, NAFTA was crucial to the growth of the North American continent and encouraged regional trade and cross-border investment between the United States, Mexico and Canada; and whereas, Between 2015 – 2017 Arizona exported $10.5 billion annually to Mexico and Canada and 228,000 Arizona jobs are dependent on the annual trade and investment relationships; and whereas, the United States, Mexico and Canada have recently renegotiated NAFTA, modernizing the agreement based on the economies and technologies of the present day, renaming it the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA); and whereas, the USMCA contains improved provisions on rules of origin, market access for agriculture products and intellectual property which will significantly benefit Arizona companies and residents; helping to create and maintain jobs within Pinal County.
