Town offers to settle with Florence Copper

The town has offered an “olive branch” to Florence Copper, asking that each side drop its legal claims against the other and move forward as partners.

It was a sudden reversal that surprised observers after the town’s staunch opposition to the mine for the last seven years. The Town Council held a special meeting Friday to approve the proposed settlement agreement by a vote of 5-2.

Mayor Tara Walter read a statement as Friday’s meeting began that said in part, “Our offer provides for and facilitates communication. It fosters relationships to ensure that we are part of the process in the future, to work together as partners to safeguard the aquifer, the environment and our citizens.”
