Florence leaning toward roundabout at dangerous intersection

An old hippy-dippy pop song won’t fix the worst intersection in Florence. But town and state officials are pretty sure a one-way traffic circle — known as a roundabout — will.

That’s actually two roundabouts, one at the notorious intersection of state routes 287 and 79B, and the other at the western end of Florence Heights Drive. This solution scores the highest among various alternatives considered in the state’s “Design Concept Report” for the intersection, which the Town Council approved Monday. The vote was 4-2, with Vice Mayor John Anderson and Councilman Bill Hawkins voting no. Mayor Tara Walter was absent.
