Casa Grande council puts off decision on irrigation system for historic district

City officials punted a decision on a small irrigation system amid fears of turning the lush landscape “ever-brown.”

On Monday during the regular meeting of the Casa Grande City Council, council members delayed a decision on repairs for the irrigation system that services about a dozen homes in the city’s historic Evergreen district. Instead, the item was tabled and city staff was asked to continue to look at options for the well.

City staff had recommended the council cease all maintenance and operation of the well by June 30, 2020. Steve Hardesty, community services director, whose department oversees the city’s parks, said the well is far too costly to maintain and said repairs — up to and including a whole new well — could cost in excess of $1 million.
