Florence’s fiber optic network growing

The recent rebuilding of First Street isn’t just giving the motoring public a smoother ride. Data is traveling faster, too.

Before the new street was built, communications infrastructure company Zayo Group installed fiber optic cable conduits. These provide the way for Zayo’s fiber network to reach the Florence Library & Community Center for gigabit internet access and future fiber expansion in town.

Fiber optic cable uses light to transfer data in large volumes. While household internet speeds are typically 50 or 100 mbps (megabits per second), gigabit speed is 1,000. High speeds are important to schools and other places that have many internet users at one time, according to Trenton Shaffer, information director for the town of Florence.
