Florence developing ‘Poston Butte Preserve’

Poston Butte Mountain in Florence
The feature variously known as F Mountain and Poston Butte through the decades will henceforth be called Poston Butte Preserve as the town seeks to enlarge it for more open space and trails, provide amenities and preserve the history.
Florence Community Services Director Bryan Hughes updated the Town Council on those efforts, including the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board’s support for the name Poston Butte Preserve, at the council’s Sept. 3 meeting.
The town already controls 160 acres on and around the butte through a patent from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The town has pending applications for more patents on 128 more acres to the east and 78 more acres to the west. Plans include not only preserving “Father of Arizona” Charles Poston’s trail to the summit, but building a perimeter trail around the butte.
