Prison loss could mean total $2.5 million hit to Florence

The proposed closure of Arizona State Prison-Florence Complex could cost the town as much as $2.5 million annually, officials say.

Amid other losses to the town with the pending prison closure, the sewer utility could lose $650,000 per year, and the remaining ratepayers could be on the hook for the shortfall, the Florence Town Council was told.

The discussion arose as the council approved a notice of intent to increase water and wastewater rates April 1 as scheduled in the town’s 2018 rate study. A customer who uses 5,000 gallons of water per month should notice an increase of approximately $4.13.
