After learning what a minimally funded second high school could look like in June, the Maricopa Unified School District board has voted to allocate additional funds to the tune of $5 million.

The move on Wednesday comes as the district grappled with the need for a new high school and the lack of funds available from the state. The district must build a 125,000-square-foot property in order to receive adequate funds from the State Facilities Board, and it will use about $18.5 million of the $26 million allocation in the first phase.

In a May presentation, Jeremy Keck, project manager for Chasse Building Team, described the limitations of that money, saying parts of the high school would be “a shell.” At the following meeting June 10, MUSD Business Director Jacob Harmon addressed the board with the proposal to take out a loan to cover the big-ticket items that cannot be changed later on.
