Solar project development speeding up in Arizona, with thousands of acres in play

Governments and businesses shifting to renewable energy has led to a series of massive land deals in Arizona for solar projects, with more in the works.

Vermaland, one of the state’s largest private landowners, has leased 2,000 acres in Gila Bend to a solar developer in April, and soon after leased 1,600 acres in Hyder, which is about 115 miles outside of Phoenix, and 900 acres in Harquahala Valley, outside of Tonopah, both for solar development.

Kuldip Verma, founder and CEO of Vermaland, said the company is also in the process of working out three or four more deals with solar developers. With the uptick in demand, and the large amount of land needed for a solar development, Verma said he expects the demand for land for solar projects to outpace the supply.
