Roadwork begins in Pinal to prep for new freeway construction

Construction began this week in San Tan Valley in preparation for the major widening of a state highway connecting Maricopa and Pinal counties.
Beginning Monday and running through Jan. 31, Ironwood Drive will be one lane in each direction north of Germann Road, the Arizona Department of Transportation said. Crews are widening the road in preparation for the future State Route 24.
A five-mile stretch of SR 24, also referred to as Gateway Freeway, will be reconstructed into a new freeway extending from Ellsworth Road in Maricopa County to Ironwood Drive in Pinal County.
