Community leaders not happy with Eloy’s marijuana ordinance

Church pastors and other community members were not pleased with the City Council’s decision to adopt an ordinance that now allows recreational marijuana establishments to be located in close proximity to homes and other buildings.
The council approved the ordinance in a 5-2 vote, council members Dan Synder and Jose Garcia voted no.
“We only have the ability to have one (establishment),” Snyder said. “I just wonder if I was a businessperson and I had a license for recreational marijuana, where would I want to put that if I was in Eloy? Would I want to put it in downtown or would I put out near the interstate where there’s more traffic and where people can get to it easily? Do we really need to have this discussion of the downtown area because for the one potential that we might get, businesswise it makes a lot more sense to go to the commercial zones that we already have approval for.”
