Being more than an hour away from either of Pinal County’s Family Advocacy Centers in Eloy and San Tan Valley, the city of Maricopa started its own a few years ago as a service to its most vulnerable crime victims.

Maricopa has now asked Pinal County to take over the center, and the Board of Supervisors agreed to consider it Wednesday. The board voted 4-1 to direct the county manager and county attorney to negotiate with the city to transition operations, including transfer of equipment and taking over leases and grants.

The center assists vulnerable people who have been victims of a crime or are involved in a crime, especially children and the elderly. It offers medical examinations, help for abuse victims, advocacy and a safe space for families. In addition to victims in Maricopa, area Native American tribes use the center.
