The Gila River Indian Community’s push to gain territorial rights over the historic Blackwater Trading Post passed a major hurdle last week.
On May 12, bipartisan vote passed the Blackwater Trading Post Land Transfer Act in the U.S. House. The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Tom O’Halleran, D-Sedona, who represents Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.
“Blackwater Trading Post has been an important community site for the Gila River Indian Community for over a hundred years,” O’Halleran said. “They have every right to this land, and it is my honor to build upon the efforts of many in the community to bring them into trust.”
