Historic district across Arizona leave resident wanting more

Residents of historic districts in Arizona recently have expressed “a general dissatisfaction” with how their cities and towns are running the districts.

Eric Vondy, certified local governments coordinator with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), discussed recent trends in historic preservation with Florence’s Historic District Advisory Commission (HDAC) on Aug. 29.

An example of this dissatisfaction is Phoenix’s mural program, which some residents don’t support. Another problem is contemporary “infill” construction in historic districts. It doesn’t harm the district, but people don’t like how it looks, Vondy said.
