Promises made, promises kept in Marana

When the Marana Town Council approved an increase to its transaction privilege tax more than three years ago, they made a promise: We will reverse the change after collecting $18 million to help develop a new police facility.

Last Tuesday, Oct. 16, council kept that promise with unanimous approval to decrease its tax rate by one-half-cent, beginning Jan. 1, 2019, after new estimates place the $18 million marker sometime in December.

Deputy Town Manager Erik Montague told the council last week that ahead of the tax hike, town staff, councilmembers and the Marana Police Department worked with the community via on-site visits, surveys, media spots and open houses to gauge the public’s interest in developing a new facility for MPD. Montague said the result of that public engagement was widespread public approval for the project.
