New fire escape OK’d for Silver King Marketplace in Florence

In the event of fire, top-floor and balcony occupants of Silver King Marketplace will be able to evacuate using the outside stairs following a renovation project approved Monday night.
The Town Council approved a contract Monday with The SJ Anderson Company for $63,215 to connect the existing stairs to the existing deck. The contract also includes minor modifications to existing doors, suppression systems, an exit landing, exit lighting and secure access.
Vice Mayor John Anderson asked if the town would then be allowing open access to the balcony without going through the building. Public Works Director Chris Salas replied the project includes a code-allowable gate that works only in one direction to prevent this.
