Prison population in Florence continues to decrease

The state prison population has seen an 8.7% decrease since last September, which will affect Florence’s state shared revenues in the future, according to the town manager.

Although the governor announced the closure of the state prison’s Florence Complex in January, the closure was not part of the governor’s “skinny budget,” Brent Billingsley said. There were 3,589 inmates in Florence Complex at the beginning of the year, but since the closure of the minimum-security North Unit, it is down to 2,555, but up 2% over last month.
