At governor rep’s budget discussion, community stands up for education

At the suitable location of the Coolidge Unified School District’s governing board room, frustrations over the treatment of public education in Arizona spilled over into the normally tranquil Coolidge Chamber of Commerce monthly membership luncheon.
Lorenzo Romero, who on May 11 was appointed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey as his office’s director of strategic planning and budgeting, was the featured speaker at the luncheon on May 20. He discussed topics like deregulation, the ways the state is balancing its budget after years of shortfalls, and more issues. But the topic that got the most passion out of the crowd, particularly during the question and answer portion at the end, was education.
Romero talked about Ducey’s initiative, the Arizona Public School Achievement District, which aims to put $24 million into high-achieving schools.
“The governor is keen on putting more dollars into the classroom and making sure they’re going in there,” Romero said.
