In August, voters sent a message to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office when they chose challenger Kent Volkmer over incumbent Lando Voyles in the Republican primary election.
Without a Democratic challenger, that decision locked Volkmer in as the new face of what had become a contentious office. Now, come January, the former defense attorney will have to answer to the people and prove himself to a county seemingly ready for change.
“It’s our job to make sure the right thing happens,” Volkmer said, “not to try to punish people, not to stroke our egos or to make ourselves look good or get our pictures in the paper or to get elected. Our job is to do what’s right.”
He called PCAO the “ministers of justice,” responsible not for representing political interests but rather for ensuring rights are upheld and communities are improved.
