Maricopa ethanol plant Pinal Energy turns corn into fuel, cattle feed, dry ice

Despite a shutdown of more than a year between 2013 and 2014, Arizona’s only ethanol plant is back in production, producing about 50 million gallons of ethanol per year.

The one-of-a-kind Pinal Energy facility in Maricopa uses corn to not only churn out millions of gallons of auto fuel but also to create a variety of other products, such as feed grain for cattle and dry ice for grocers.

The owners and operators of Arizona Grain, the largest grain handler in the state, saw ethanol as a natural extension, so they began construction on the $74 million Pinal Energy plant in 2005 and officially opened it in 2007.
