The Arizona Department of Transportation is progressing toward the construction of an overpass on State Route 347 in Maricopa.

On Monday, crews began demolition of several vacant homes ADOT acquired to clear the way for the overpass. Work will then proceed on the project, which is scheduled to be completed by late 2019.

Among the buildings scheduled for demolition is the former Copa Center on the southeast corner of SR 347 and Honeycutt Road. This was previously the home of senior programs in the city, which have since been moved elsewhere, such as Copper Sky Recreation Complex. The building will be demolished at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
